Musa basjoo (Japanese / Hardy Banana Plant) in 15cm Pot, Height 50cm
€16.99 “Price excl. VAT: €14.97”
Often called the Japanese or hardy banana, Musa basjoo is now thought to originate from China’s Sichuan Province.
Although it grows to the size of a small tree, don’t be alarmed when the foliage dies back after the first frosts. In our climate, it behaves like a giant herbaceous perennial, dying back to the roots each winter before producing vigorous new growth in spring.
As temperatures rise, Musa basjoo quickly develops large, lush leaves, creating a dramatic tropical effect. It thrives with regular watering and feeding and it may produce bananas, but they are not edible.
Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It also grows well in containers for patios or conservatories, although it will remain smaller than plants grown in the ground.
Hardy to around -15C, it benefits from winter protection in colder areas. Apply a thick mulch over the roots and wrap the pseudostem with horticultural fleece. In mild, sheltered gardens, it may need little or no protection.
