The jade plant (Crassula ovata) is a succulent sub-shrub native to southern Africa. It resembles a miniature tree, with fleshy jade-green leaves and thick stems that become woody with age. A popular houseplant, it’s also known as the money plant or friendship plant and is often given as a housewarming or wedding gift, symbolising good fortune and prosperity.

Over time, Crassula ovata may produce small, star-shaped pink or white flowers, typically in winter. It also has air-purifying properties, making it both a beautiful and beneficial addition to your home.

Ideal for beginners, the jade plant is easy to care for and thrives on minimal attention. Water regularly during spring and summer, allowing the top few centimetres of compost to dry out between waterings. It is drought-tolerant thanks to its water-storing leaves, and it’s better to underwater than overwater. Feed a few times a year and repot every few years, preferably in spring.

Grow in a bright, sunny spot for best results.
