Strelitzia nicolai (Giant Bird of Paradise) in 24cm Pot, Height 140cm

This structural plant is primarily grown for its handsome, banana-like foliage, which naturally splits as it matures. Given time and the right conditions, it may occasionally produce a striking blue and white flowerhead. In its native environment it can reach considerable heights (with leaves approaching 4m), but when grown in a pot as an indoor plant it remains a much more compact, yet highly decorative specimen.

During the growing season, water regularly and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly. Reduce watering in winter and top-dress each spring. Remove older leaves as they naturally decline. Repot into a larger container in spring as needed. Plants may be moved outdoors from May to September, provided there is no risk of frost, but require winter protection and should be kept in a greenhouse or conservatory from October to April.
