Durable ‘cone flowers’ with bold centres. A half-hardy perennial, best grown as a half hardy annual. Reliable and rewarding, vividly coloured border plants. Lasting displays, ideal for beds, borders, tubs and cutting.
Height: 75 cm/30-inch
Plant Class: Half Hardy Perennial (Treat as HHA)
Useful Information: Suitable for containers; Full sun; Suitable for cutting; Perfect for Pollination
Sow and Grow: Sow indoors for surest results, February-April, 0.5 cm (1/4-inch) deep, in trays of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20 degree C (60-68 degree F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 14-21 days. Transplant them, 5 cm (2-inch) apart, to other trays when large enough to handle. Always hold by a leaf, never by the stem.
Grow on in cooler, but not cold conditions. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out into well-drained soil, May-June, 30 cm (12-inch) apart, when frosts are over. Or, sow outdoors for ease, April-May, where they are to flower, 1.5 cm (1/2-inch) deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Thin seedlings as required. Water well until plants are established. Flowers: July to October.
Hints and Tips: Remove dead heads to prolong the flowering season. An excellent cut flower, if cut when buds begin to colour.
