Sow and Grow: Sow indoors, January-April, to flower the same year, 0.5 cm (1/4-inch) deep, in a tray of compost. Water well and place in a cold frame, unheated greenhouse, or on a warm kitchen windowsill. A temperature of 15-20 degree C is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 21-35 days. Transplant them to other trays, 5 cm (2-inch) apart, when large enough to handle. Always hold by a leaf, never by the stem. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out into well-drained soil, May-June, 30 cm (12-inch) apart, when frosts are over. Flowers: July to October.
Hints and Tips: Penstemon are hardy to approximately -5 degree C. Plants need a sheltered location and will benefit from cloche or straw protection through winter.
