Dracaenas, or dragon trees, are popular, easy-going and long-lived houseplants.

They prefer bright, indirect light but will tolerate lower light levels. Keep them out of strong direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Keep dracaenas somewhere warm and draught-free, ideally around 18–27C, and away from cold windows and heat sources such as radiators. They are happy with average household humidity, although slightly higher humidity can help reduce brown leaf tips.

Use a well-drained, slightly acidic potting mix and allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry out before watering. Avoid leaving the plant sitting in water, as consistently wet compost can cause root rot.

If your tap water is hard or contains fluoride, rainwater or filtered water may help reduce brown leaf tips and mineral build-up in the compost. Allow water to reach room temperature before watering.
