Dischidia ovata is a succulent perennial species in the family Apocynaceae. It originates from New Guinea to North Queensland and is cultivated around the world as a fun houseplant. It is epiphytic in nature and thus grows on the surfaces of other organisms and glean nutrition from their immediate surroundings. Grown mainly for the fleshy leaves, foliage is attractive and green, resembling watermelons, hence the common names Watermelon Dischidia and Watermelon Vine. The leaves can develop red colouration in bright light. The flowers are interesting, coloured yellow-green and these are not particularly showy. Watermelon Dischidia is an unusual and lovely plant to grow indoors as a houseplant.
