Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree) in 3L Pot

€26.99 “Price excl. VAT: €23.78”

Arbutus unedo (Strawberry tree) is a small evergreen tree, native to the Mediterranean and parts of Ireland. It has dark-green, leathery leaves and distinctive reddish-brown bark that peels to reveal a smooth, cinnamon-coloured layer beneath. Strawberry-like fruits ripen in autumn, at the same time as clusters of bell-shaped flowers appear. Highly ornamental, it makes an excellent small tree for a sunny or partially shaded position.

The flowers are popular with bees, while the ripe fruits are enjoyed by birds and small mammals. In Ireland, the strawberry tree is often used in Christmas decorations and is associated with good luck.

Grow in well-drained, moderately fertile soil, in full sun to partial shade. Generally hardy to around -10°C, it benefits from protection from cold winds and frosts when young. A sheltered position, such as against a south-facing wall, is ideal.
